The building inspection division administers building permits and inspections. The desk is open 8 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday. Contact community development.

You need a building permit if you are building, improving, repairing, changing, or moving a building. This includes but is not limited to:

Decks
Garages
Porches
Basement remodeling
Windows
Siding
Roofing
Permits are also needed for:
Electrical
Plumbing
Heating
Air conditioning

Zoning permits are needed for fences, sheds, and driveways.

All new construction, additions, alterations, or repairs that require a building permit also require a smoke & carbon monoxide detector. All detectors must be installed to code.

You can apply for building permits online or via mail.

Applications

Download and complete the application
Email the application and plans to permits@shoreviewmn.gov or mail the application and plans to:

Please call 651-490-4680 if you are delivering plans by courier.

Issuing permits

Staff will notify applicants once permits are approved
Applicants can pay by credit card via a provided link, over the phone with a credit card, in person or mail a check to the above address
Staff will email the permits once payment is received
- Applicants can also request the permit to be mailed

Inspections

Submit an inspection request at least two working days before the requested date. You can request an inspection by emailing the inspector:

Commercial inspections
Residential inspections
Roof and siding inspections
Please provide an email or phone number to receive confirmation
Siding, and roofing inspections can be completed with no one on site.

See if your permit is ready to be issued

Permits that require a plan typically take 10 working days to process and approve the permit for issuance. Some applications may take longer.

Online permitting for contractors

Contractors can apply and pay for simple residential building, electric, HVAC and plumbing permits online. Contractors must be registered with the building inspection division and have current state license information on file.

To apply and pay online:

Email the building department for your web pin permits@shoreviewmn.gov
Set up an account with BS&A online
On left-hand menu, click "Apply for a permit"
Enter a contractor web pin ID#
Select the project address
Complete the application form
Pay for the permit
- Credit card transactions are limited to payments under $10,000
- Please submit a check for any payments $10,000 or more

You will receive a confirmation and permit via email.
