New construction and landscaping projects disturb the land. This places the area at risk for soil and sediment erosion. Proper erosion control helps keep our lakes and storm sewer systems clean. For non-lake lots, a city permit is required when:

  • More than 1,000 square feet of area is being disturbed
  • More than 10 cubic yards of soil is being excavated

For lakeshore properties or bluff impact zones, a city permit is required when:

  • More than 500 square feet of area is being disturbed
  • More than 5 cubic yards of soil is being excavated

For land disturbing projects smaller than this, erosion control is still required. For more information on permits and erosion control requirements, please see the link below.
